What does indirect sunlight mean for indoor plants?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerIndirect sunlight means the plant receives bright light but isn't in the direct path of the sun's rays. It's often filtered through a curtain or reflected off walls.

The difference between direct and indirect

Direct sunlight hits the plant straight on, casting a sharp shadow. Indirect sunlight is diffuse—it may come through a sheer curtain, bounce off a wall, or be the ambient light in a bright room without the sun shining directly on the leaves. Many tropical houseplants evolved under a canopy, so they're adapted to this filtered light.

A south-facing window can provide direct sun, but if you set the plant a few feet back or add a sheer curtain, it becomes indirect. East and west windows often give a mix: gentle direct sun in the morning or late afternoon, and indirect light the rest of the day.

How to create indirect light

If your only spot gets harsh direct sun, you can diffuse it with a sheer curtain, a blinds slat, or by moving the plant back from the window. Reflective surfaces like white walls also help spread light. Just avoid deep shade, which is too dim for most plants.

You can also use a grow light placed a few feet away to mimic indirect light. The goal is bright but not baking. If you can read a book comfortably in the spot, it's likely suitable for many houseplants.

  • Sheer curtains soften direct sun into indirect light.
  • A plant 3–5 feet from a south window often gets bright indirect light.
  • North-facing windows usually provide only indirect light, which is fine for low-light plants.
  • Rotate plants so all sides get even exposure.
  • Avoid dark corners—indirect light should still be bright enough to cast a soft shadow.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking indirect light means no sun at all—it can still be very bright.
  • Putting a 'bright indirect' plant in a dim hallway and expecting it to thrive.
  • Assuming a sheer curtain blocks all light—it only diffuses it.
